Will a tipi work for…
It is the question we hear most often — usually from someone who already has the landscape in mind, and is not yet sure whether canvas belongs in it. Will a tipi work for a wedding? For a product launch? For a 50th in the garden? For a festival stage?
The short answer is yes. Fjell Event Tipis has been creating events under authentic Nordic canvas since 2012, from a family-run base in the Lake District fells. We build for weddings, parties, corporate gatherings and festivals across Cumbria, the North West, the North East and Southern Scotland. The longer answer depends on the day you are planning — and that is what this piece is for.
A tipi is not a marquee with a different silhouette. It is a structure we can locate where you want, when you want, scaled from a single giant tipi — typically around 50 seated guests — to linked villages of 200, 300 or more. What changes is the atmosphere you ask it to hold.
…a wedding?

A tipi wedding is not only for festival lovers or outdoor enthusiasts. It is for anyone who wants a day that feels truly theirs — vows framed against the landscape, then a room that still feels intimate when the speeches begin.
We have been creating tipi weddings for over ten years, with hundreds of celebrations across the UK. Guest lists run from an intimate gathering of 30 to a grand celebration for 300 or more. The canvas is authentic Nordic — waterproof, breathable, fire-retardant, structurally tested and fully insured — and the interior can take wooden tables, cross-back chairs, velvet lounges, a rustic bar, festoon and fairy lights, a dance floor, heating and flooring. Central fire pits are part of what makes the space feel like a place, not a hire.
We are multi-finalists at The Wedding Industry Awards, and the same family team — Pete and Thomas Garner — stays with you from the first enquiry through to the build. If it rains, the room is still warm, still dry, and still yours.
…a corporate event?

Away days, team building, product launches, leadership retreats, networking, a company-wide gathering — a tipi changes the register of a corporate event. It is a space that energises, connects and inspires; it breaks down barriers in a way a hotel ballroom rarely does.
We plan for an intimate leadership retreat of 20 as readily as a conference of 500 or more. The same Nordic structures, the same single point of contact, and a paper trail that stands up to scrutiny: method statements, risk assessments, StructureSafe training records, insurance and on-site support. We are MUTA certified — and the only MUTA-certified tipi member in Cumbria.
Among the organisations we have built for: Alaska Seafood, Ardbeg, Berghaus, EE, Exodus Holidays, Garmin, Haglöfs, Ordnance Survey, Pernod-Ricard, Pimm’s, Red Bull, T-Mobile and Trail Magazine. The brief is never generic. The accessories are tailored to the day.
…a party?

Milestone birthdays, anniversary dinners, garden parties, festive celebrations — a tipi party is for anyone who wants a gathering that feels truly special. The atmosphere is one no other venue quite matches: a bar under canvas, a dance floor that fills, lights in the poles, the garden still there beyond the doors.
We will put it in your garden, on a family farm, or in the grounds of a country estate. Guest numbers run from around 30 to 300 or more. Linked giant tipis, a catering tent, festoon and fairy lights, a disco ball, round tables, folding chairs, a fire box on the terrace — the setup follows the kind of night you want, not a fixed floorplan.
The Lake District team works throughout Cumbria, the North West, the North East and Southern Scotland. You do not need a traditional venue. You need a place, a date, and a reason to get everyone in the same room.
…a festival?

At a festival, a tipi is not just a tent. It is a destination — an intimate acoustic stage, a late-night dance tent, a VIP area, a media hub, a retail concession, or a sprawling festival village. The canvas brings a sense of wonder that no marquee can match: structures as memorable as the line-up, warm enough to keep people in, distinctive enough to become the talking point of the weekend.
We have been creating tipi events since 2012, for everything from Christmas markets to music festivals, from boutique gatherings to major headline events. Festivals across Cumbria, the North West, the North East and Southern Scotland sit within reach of our Lake District base. As MUTA members we supply the health and safety paperwork — method statements, risk assessments, training records including StructureSafe — alongside the build and on-site support.
The practical answer
Whatever the event type, the kit is the same family of authentic Nordic tipis — Tentipi structures, built for the elements, with sides that can be raised or lowered and floor plans that scale. One giant tipi is typically around 50 seated guests. Link them, and you can seat 100, 150, 200, 250 and beyond. Stretch tents sit alongside when the brief needs a different shape of cover.
Matting is standard. Hard flooring, catering tents, heaters, generators and luxury loos are there when you need a turn-key site rather than a pop-up. We provide as much or as little support as the event requires.
So: will a tipi work for your wedding, your away day, your party, your festival? If you want a space that belongs to the landscape, holds a crowd, and still feels like a room — yes. The rest is a conversation about dates, numbers and where you want it to stand.

One structure, four kinds of gathering
Founded in 2012, Fjell is still family-run from Keswick — the only event tipi provider based in the Lake District, serving the North of England, Scotland, and beyond. The name is the old Norse spelling of fell, and the canvas is the same Scandinavian craft we have been putting on the ground for more than a decade.
If you already know the type of event, start with that page. If you are still asking whether a tipi will work at all, tell us the date, the numbers and the field. We will tell you honestly what will sit there — and what it will feel like once the sides are up.
